Academy Recap: U-19 Pre-Academy Claims League Title, U-19 Academy Still Undefeated
November 7, 2018
It was a busy weekend for Barça Residency Academy with all eight teams in action, playing in a total of 10 games.
The Academy teams traveled to Santa Ana, California to face Southwest Division competitors Strikers FC on Saturday. The U-15s were first to take the field and suffered their second straight loss, the U-17s were next to take the field and fell to Strikers FC 5-2. The U-19s were last to take on Strikers FC and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 shutout win. The U-19s remain undefeated in the DA and are now #1 in the DA Playoff standings.
In the Arizona Advanced Leagues, the Pre-Academy teams finished the weekend with four wins and three losses. The U-15s defeated Southern Arizona Spartans 4-3. The U-16s went 2-0 over the weekend, beating Excel Academy and RSL-AZ South 2-1 and 3-1 respectively. The U-17s fell 3-2 to Excel Soccer Academy in their final game of the season. Barça Academy U-15 vs. Strikers FC
The U-15s kicked off the day in Santa Ana, California against Strikers FC looking to bounce back from their loss the weekend before.
Unfortunately, like the weekend before Barça Academy had trouble connecting passes consistently and breaking through the high press. Strikers FC capitalized off this and scored three goals in the first half to earn a 3-0 halftime lead. Barça Academy conceded three additional goals in the second half and fell to Strikers FC 6-0.
“Going forward we will need to continue to work on our recovery phase,” said Coach Daniel Antunez. “We need to deal with the pressure of the opposition in a more composed manner.”
Barça Academy U-17 vs. Strikers FC
The U-17s took the field next, looking to build upon last week’s positive performance. They started the game brightly and were comfortable on the ball. Barça Academy scored the opening goal in the 25th minute by way of Diego Luna after an excellent run forward from Edwin Arias.
Barça Academy held their 1-0 advantage into the break but the second half would be a different story.
Strikers FC came out hot and quickly put two into the back of the net that would put Barça Academy on their heels
Barça Academy worked hard to score an equalizer but a third goal by Strikers in the 74th minute put the game out of reach. Caden Clark would score in the 74th minute to draw back within one but Strikers FC added goals in the 81st and 89th minute to solidify the win.
“We need to learn from the lessons of this game to improve moving forward,” said coach Ged Quinn. “We will now begin our preparations for the visit of Ballistic next weekend as our final game before the DA Showcase in Florida later this month.”
Barça Academy U-19 vs. Strikers FC
The U-19s rounded out the day in Santa Ana against Strikers FC as they looked to remain undefeated. Barça Academy started the game very well as they created numerous opportunities in the opening minutes of the game and were rewarded in the 12th minute when Arjan Dosanjh opened scoring.
Barça Academy controlled the tempo of the game and looked very dangerous going forward and scored a well-deserved second goal after great work from Christian Ortiz in which he created a tap in header for Arjan Dosanjh’s second goal of the game.
Barça Academy entered halftime with a 2-0 lead and made it 3-0 in the 59th minute when Matthew Hoppe scored his 12th goal of the season off a corner.
Barça Academy managed the remainder of the game well and had opportunities to score a fourth but was able to keep the sheet clean and put Strikers FC away 3-0.
“We kept a clean sheet which I was very pleased about,” said coach Sean McCafferty. “This was our last league game prior to the Florida Showcase so we will get everyone healthy in the coming weeks and prepare for some great games at the event.”
Arizona Premier League
In the Arizona Advanced Leagues, the Pre-Academy teams finished the weekend with major positives.

The U-16s went 2-0 over the weekend, beating Excel Academy and RSL-AZ South 2-1 and 3-1 respectively to put themselves in a great position to win the league. They are now #2 in the Arizona Premier League standings, trailing RSL-AZ Southern by three points with a game in hand. The U-17s wrapped up their Arizona Premier League season this weekend with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Excel Academy with the winning goal coming in the final minute of the game off a corner.
The U-18s fell to Phoenix Rising 2-0 and move to 4-5-0 on in the Arizona State League.
