Academy Recap: Barça Residency Academy goes 9-1-1 over the Weekend

RECAP

What a weekend for Barça Residency Academy as the Academy and Pre-Academy teams combined for an impressive weekend record of 9W-1L-1D. The Academy teams continued in U.S. Soccer Development Academy action at Grande Sports World – Home of Barça Residency Academy where they played host to Southern California side, Albion SC. The U-15s kicked off the day with a strong performance lead by Hiram Lugo who scored both goals in their 2-0 win. The U-19 were next to the field and defeated Albion 4-3 as they remain unbeaten with a  5-0-1 record. The U-17s concluded the day with a 2-1 loss to Albion despite a late second half rally.

The Pre-Academy teams all improved their standings in the Arizona Advanced League with wins across the board for the U-15, U-16, U-17, U-18 and U-19 teams. They compiled for a weekend record of 7W-0L-1D, scoring 26 goals while only conceding three.

Barça Academy U-15 vs. Albion SC

The U-15s opened the day against Albion SC in warm, sunny conditions on Saturday morning at Grande Sports World. The U-15s had one of their better performances of the season as they controlled the game from start to finish. Barça had a few good looks at the goal early on in the game but opened scoring in the 16th minute when Hiram Lugo headed in Diego Hernandez’s shot that initially deflected off post. Barca’s next shot on goal came in the 34th minute when Justin Kern played a beautiful inswinging ball into the box, Diego Hernandez was able to get his head on the ball but his attempt was saved by the keeper. Barca Academy entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Hiram Lugo scored a brace in the 53rd minute when he beat defenders down the left touchline and finished far post. Barca Residency Academy goalkeeper Alan Flores was tested in the 64th minute and made a big 1 v 1 save that allowed Barca to shutout Albion SC 2-0.

Barça Academy U-19 vs. Albion SC

The U-19s were next to take the field and quickly put Albion on their heels as Matthew Hoppe scored the opening goal in the 5th minute. Barça doubled their lead in the 31st minute with a nice give and go from Ryan Combe to Matthew Hoppe, Hoppe timed the ball perfectly back to Combe who put it past the keeper.

Goalkeeper Djibril Doumbia was called into action in the 43rd minute in a 1 v 1 with an Albion attacker. Doumbia made himself big and cleared the ball from close range to keep the score 2-0 into the half.

The score was made 3-0 just one minute after the break with Combe and Hoppe again involved in the action. Combe won the ball from Albion mid-field, played Matthew Hoppe through on the left side, Hoppe sent a lofted cross into the box for Cameron Fisher who whipped the header into the back of the net.

Albion would score just a minute later, making it 3-1. Albion netted another in the 58th minute to put themselves back into the game. Nine minutes later, Jaden Strumeire found Matthew Hoppe in the box who beat his man with pace and strength and struck the ball into the back of the net to bring the score to 4-2. Albion SC would add one in the final seconds of the game, making the final 4-3.

Barça Academy U-17 vs. Albion SC

The U-17s took the field last against Albion in a game that resulted in a 2-1 Barça Residency Academy loss.

Barça was dangerous in the attacking third in the first half of the game, creating many chances but could not convert. The teams entered the break deadlocked at 0-0. 12 minutes into the second half is when Albion opened scoring, taking a 1-0 lead. Albion added to their advantage in the 70th minute from a corner that Barça failed to clear from the box. Nick Bisagno grabbed a goal back for Barça in the 87th minute and Caleb Suh had an attempt at the goal in the final minute of the game to equalize but his shot sailed over the crossbar and Albion beat Barça Residency Academy 2-1.

Arizona Advanced Leagues

The Pre-Academy teams had a great weekend as they compiled for a record of 7W-0L-1D, scoring 26 goals while only giving up three.

The U-19’s record remains unblemished as they moved to 5-0 in the Arizona Premier League (APL) with two shutout wins over the weekend. They defeated Phoenix Premier 3-0 on Friday with goals by Tarek El-Daly, Bernard Padilla and Patrick Zupic and RLS-AZ North 6-0 on Saturday with goals by Tyler Hutchinson, Andre Virgen, Tarek El-Daly (2) and Zupic (2). The U-19s are not only undefeated, but they have shut out all five of their opponents while scoring an astounding 30 goals.

The U-18s played in a single game this weekend, beating RSL-AZ North 3-1. Athan Cosse scored a brace and Brian Park added the other, they are now 4-2 in the Arizona State League (ASL).

Excel Academy forfeited their game against the U-17s on Saturday resulting in a 2-0 win for Barça Academy, moving them to 4-1-1 in the APL.

The U-16s had a doubleheader this weekend. They shut out Excel Academy 5-0 on Friday with goals by Adrian Sanchez (2) Victor Rodriguez (2) and Rafael Ceniceros. They beat RSL-AZ North the following day by score of 4-2 Adrian Sanchez added two more goals to his weekend resume, Shane Simpson scored his first goal of the season and Victor Rodriguez contributed the other. They are now 4-1 in the APL.

The U-15’s Saturday game against RSL-AZ North was called in the 40th minute due to an RSL-AZ injury, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The U-15s then shutout Renegades SC on Sunday by score of 5-0 with goals by Banyon Lyon (2), Cole Kim, Adrian Diaz and Ramon Contreras. They are now 2-1-1 in ASL.
